Some of my Olympic Heroes

It makes me feel ecstatic to watch the Olympics: Summer or Winter.

I love seeing countries compete and show national pride for their teammates.  Even if they are not from the United States, I can be happy for the competitors and their amazing accomplishments.  They sometimes almost bring me to the verge of tears and heartfelt feelings for those who try their best for themselves and for their country.

I can remember watching the Olympics, in 1996! I was only 7 years old!  When Kerri Strug landed the vault for the women's United States Olympic team.  That was an awe inspiring moment.

Fast forward a couple of years to men's swimming.  Summer Olympics of 2008 and 2012: Michael Phelps.  Stellar Olympic athlete, great example of what aspirations can bring.  He's won the most Olympic medals than anyone in history.

These guys had their dreams and they accomplished them.

You know, and even heart breaks, and dreams that have been dashed; this is what we live for.  Sometimes we cannot gain everything we hope for.  Seeing Shaun White fail to reach the podium in these, the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, was terrible.  But then we see others do their best, and even come up with their own signature move, the YOLO flip, courtesy of Iouri Podladtchikov, for Switzerland (from Russia).

Life is good, but sometimes hard.  We face opposition.

There is a story I read about.  The main message was: we might want it to be sunny, but there are others that are praying for it to rain.  Who is God going to appease?  I'm sure all of the Olympic athletes all want to win, but there are only three that will make the podium.  It's good to see others try.

Oh!  And I almost forgot!  For a long time I wanted to be him.  Apolo Anton Ohno.  The top speed skater.  I always wanted to be a speed skater because of him; then I would get on the ice and clumsily skate my heart away.  I loved watching him compete, and he was the person that got me into the Winter Olympics.

  1. For a long time I wanted to be an Olympic figure skater. I never even got on the ice until I was 12 years old because we couldn't afford it. My mom tried really hard to get me a pair of figure skates. But I am content with where my life has been and will skate again after my ankle's healed.
