Why I'm Juancito
It all begun with juancito_400m@hotmail.com. I was probably like 12 or 13 years old. I had just learned about email addresses and the possibilities of staying connected with cousins via the internet. The biggest influence I had of getting an email address was probably my cousins Jocelyn Palmer and Jade Fawcett. We were having a family reunion and my two favorite cousins my age and I were in Granny and Grandpa's computer room. Hotmail seemed to be the "in" email address amongst my two cousins, plus there was instant messaging-being able to talk with my cousins simultaneously. I cannot remember where I got the "juancito" part of my email address. I just knew that I am Latino and I wanted to be something close to my name. So, JUANCITO was born.
The "_400m" was easy. I participated in track and field and the 400m was my signature race (my best time was 57 seconds flat.)
So my email address was born. Since then I have taken the underscore out and upgraded to Gmail. Not to mention my twitter account is @juancito400m.
Juancito is actually not grammatically correct though. When adding -ito/-ita to a word, there are no c's involved in the process. So, in reality, my nickname, as I would call it, should be juanito.
That was true until this year, when I made friends with a Latina lady named Sonia at my place of employment, the Orem Walmart. On finding out that I speak Spanish, she became one of my best of friends at work. She asked me what my name was, and I told her John. She said that was too hard for her to remember, so she decided to call me Juan (John in Spanish).
When she greets me, she actually calls me either Juan or Juancito, with the C! My made up email nickname will live on because I made a friend with a Latina lady at work. I love Sonia. She is such a sweetheart of a lady. I wish everyone could be like Sonia.
The name lives on.
