Priesthood, the Power of God
Today was a special day for the Gonzales family. A couple weeks ago, (May 13th to be exact), my young cousin Mosiah turned twelve. He invited me to his Birthday Party. Funny thing, his younger brother Ammon got a piece of the Chocolate Oreo cake and smashed the cake in my face. Good times, good times. Anyways, at his party I told him to let me know when he would be receiving the Aaronic Priesthood.
In the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) church we believe that every man can possess the power to act in God's name, through the priesthood power. This is the power that Christ used to heal the sick, give sight to the blind, and raise men from the dead. This power is passed down from Priesthood holder to priesthood holder. After Christ died, this power became completely lost because men who held the Priesthood were persecuted and killed.
It was not until the early 1800s when this priesthood, which was lost due to apostasy, was finally restored through angels to Joseph Smith. In fact, John the Baptist, and Peter James and John
all visited the new Prophet Joseph to give him the Priesthood. Since then, men who receive the Priesthood all have what we call a "line of authority," in which states to whom the Priesthood was passed down to.
Today was special because Mosiah invited me to be there to see his ordination. Not only did I watch the ordination, but I actually participated in the ordination. The way that someone confers the Priesthood upon someone is that we lay our hands upon his head and there is a spokesperson who does the ordaining and gives the person, (in this case, a young boy) a blessing. So I got to put my hands on his head and participate in the giving of the Priesthood.
Mosiah now has responsibilities and duties as a holder of the priesthood. Responsibilities and duties increase with age. Right now Mosiah carries the lower (or Aaronic Priesthood), which has the offices of Deacon who are twelve, Teacher who are 14, and Priest who are 16 and older. Then he will be ordained to the higher Priesthood (or Melchizedek Priesthood).
I can't remember when I got ordained to the office of a deacon, however, I do know that my Dad was there for me, and has been there for me since in all of my callings and duties and responsibilities I know that the Priesthood is the power of God given to man to do good in the world. I feel honored whenever someone asks me to give them a blessing. It is a manifestation of God's grace and love that he has for everyone, not just members.
Well, Mosiah, I'm proud of you. You hold a place in my heart, especially, because you are a first child, just like me. You are also the example to your siblings. I love you, stay true to what you know. "Go and do."
Mosiah, estoy orgulloso de ti. Tienes una lugar en mi corazon, especialmente porque eres el primer hijo como yo. Eres el ejemplo para tus hermanos. Te quiero, y se valiente.
